2013 Midseason Preview: CBS & FOX

CBS and FOX are stable networks. CBS launches just one series mid-season. FOX launches one and reluctantly brings back TOUCH.

CBS

GOLDEN BOY

Created By Nick Wootton

Premiere Date: Tuesday, February 26 at 10PM; moves to its regular Friday time-slot, March 8, and will air at 9PM

Premise: (from CBS press release, December 2012) GOLDEN BOY is about the meteoric rise of an ambitious cop (Theo James) who becomes the youngest police commissioner in the history of New York City. The series explores the high personal and professional cost he pays to achieve it as he is mentored by his partner, an experienced veteran detective (Chi McBride).

Thoughts: Golden Boy is another CBS dream series. It's about a cop, a young cop, who hits success before he's ready, and before any one in the police force respects him. The trailer suggests golden boy became the police commissioner because he lost his partner and responded with fire. I don't know. I think CBS executives hear 'young cop, police procedural' and drool, daydreaming about the ratings for a creatively bland show. A Gifted Man, at least, was distinctive; of course, the show had poor ratings. Police procedurals work on CBS (and horrible sitcoms). Golden Boy just falls in line.

FOX

THE FOLLOWING

Created By Kevin Williamson

Premiere Date: Monday, January 21 at 9PM

Premise: (from FOX press release, October 2012) The intense, spellbinding drama follows RYAN HARDY (Bacon), an ex-FBI agent called out of retirement to track down JOE CARROLL (Purefoy), a devious and diabolical serial killer, and the mastermind behind an ever-growing web of killers.

Thoughts: I'll watch any show Kevin Williamson creates. Josh Friedman, the creator of The Sarah Connor Chronicles, went on a Twitter rant the other week about The Following, calling it 'disgusting' and 'exploitative,' in the wake of the Sandy Hook shooting. Kevin Bacon made a jump to television. The Following will always premiere mid-season and run for around 15 episodes because of Bacon. Perhaps, FOX wants to try to develop a cable worthy drama on network to prove it works. Lone Star failed in 2010. Williamson has had more success than Killen. Dawson's Creek ran for six years and defined The WB in a certain way. Williamson experienced failure with Wasteland, Glory Days, Cursed, Venom, and Hidden Palms, but The Vampire Diaries hit. Now, he's the creator of the most anticipated mid-season drama.

What Season? 2

Premiere Date: Friday, February 8 at 9PM

Thoughts: It's not a good sign for a show when a network continues to change a premiere date or a date of return. FOX doesn't want to air Touch, as evidenced by the different times season two's start was changed. Touch will air, though, and few people will remember this show two months after the finale.
