The Foot: DL & CC End Radio Silence

On a Friday eve in August, I purchased a magazine with the intent to read only eight pages of the entire magazine.

In those eight pages contained the first interview with Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse about the show since the series ended on May 23. Radio silence is no more. The news came out of nowhere. Jeff "Doc" Jensen tweeted that EW had a LOST dvd preview and he would write a preview the eight pages devoted to LOST for the website. Imagine my surprise and elation when I read a headline on the website that read "Darlton Speaks." I quickly clicked on the link and read Jeff Jensen's preview of the first interview in which Mr. Lindelof and Mr. Cuse talked about the series. In a matter of hours, I had the magazine in my hands.

For fans that hated the finale and who've turned their back on the series, the interview will probably make said fans angrier. The duo didn't elaborate on the conclusion of the Sideways story nor were interested in explaining what their true intentions were. They spoke about the final image of the series and how they had that image in their head for years, even the inclusion of Vincent, because Vincent was the first contact Jack had in the series so they thought Vincent should be Jack's last contact.

Fans who loved the finale and the series, like yours truly, will enjoy the interview, and will patiently await Doc Jensen to post more of the interview on the website in weeks to come. While they didn't talk about the revelation of the Sideways as a kind of purgatory, they spoke how the theme of father issues was central and meaningful to the show and how the show allowed the two to work out the difficult relationships they had with their respective fathers that played a huge role in their existences and in their lives as writers. Damon, who lost his father shortly before he began LOST, talked about the personal significance of Jack reconciling with his father. But you'll have to buy the magazine to read what Damon says about that scene as it relates to his life as well as what it meant that the Jack/Christian scene was the last scene written for the show.

I also enjoyed the happiness and excitement that the two felt during the final season of the show. In response to a question about when both were happiest on the show, Damon named two. The first: when he and Carlton negotiated an end-date that allowed the show to deliver "Through The Looking Glass." The second: the final two months working on the show. Cuse was happiest when he realized that the vision he and Damon shared for the final image of the show would actually happen.

As for the DVD preview, I skimmed it because Entertainment Weekly has the habit of giving too much away. It's exciting yet bittersweet because, once the DVD is in my hands and every feature watched and every commentary listened to, my LOST experience will truly be over.

Yes, in two weeks, Jacob's Foot finally returns for its final run.
